No USMS Prison in Crockett County
The U.S. Marshals Service is a custody manager and transporter for many federal defendants. Its prisoner operations description explains responsibility from court remand through acquittal or delivery to a designated Federal Bureau of Prisons institution. Most people awaiting federal trial are held in state, local, or private facilities rather than in a prison owned by USMS.
No federal prison or USMS-operated prison was identified within Crockett County. That does not exclude a federal case or USMS custody. A person can leave Crockett County Jail, enter federal custody, and be transported to a contract bed far from Ozona. County geography is therefore an unreliable search filter. Identify the custodian and case number instead.
A Crockett County entry showing release to USMS records a transfer of custody. It does not establish release to the community.
Follow the Federal Custody Chronology
Federal status is best understood as a sequence of records rather than a single search result. The federal court creates the remand, release, judgment, and commitment orders. USMS arranges detention and transportation. The jail that physically holds the person creates its booking and departure transaction. BOP creates a record after a sentenced person enters its designated institution system.
- Locate the federal criminal docket and confirm the defendant’s identity and case number.
- Read the latest detention, bond, release, judgment, or commitment entry in context.
- Identify the actual jail or detention contractor that held the person for USMS.
- Ask that facility for its intake and departure record, including the destination.
- If a prison sentence followed, search the official BOP locator by register number or verified name.
A court order can authorize release without stating the hour that jail processing finished. A housing jail can show physical departure without explaining the entire federal case. A BOP result can show prison status without covering the earlier pretrial period. Combining those sources, while keeping their roles separate, produces the most defensible timeline.
Why USMS Has No Release Locator
USMS does not publish a public former-prisoner search comparable to BOP’s Inmate Locator. Its detainees may occupy beds operated by many other entities, so the physical record remains with the actual housing facility and the legal record remains with the federal court. A general web search or a missing BOP result cannot establish release from USMS custody.
Ask narrowly when contacting an agency. Provide the full legal name, federal case number, date of birth if accepted, approximate detention dates, and the known facility. Request the existing admission, transfer, and release transaction rather than asking staff to research a biography. When the receiving destination is withheld or unclear, preserve the source and date of the response and continue with the docket.
| Source | Best evidence | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Federal docket | Remand, bond, release, judgment, commitment | May not show jail processing time |
| Housing facility | Physical intake, departure, destination | Does not decide the federal case |
| USMS | Custody and transport routing where releasable | No public historical locator |
| BOP locator | Sentenced-prison record and release date | May omit USMS-only pretrial custody |
When the BOP Locator Applies
Use the BOP Inmate Locator after the chronology indicates commitment to a federal prison sentence. Search by BOP register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number when available. A name search can use age, race, and sex filters, but similar names require careful identity checking. BOP records generally cover federal inmates released after 1982, subject to its documented limitations.
A BOP result can include name, register number, age, race, sex, Release Date, and Location. A past release date with a released or no-facility status supports departure from BOP custody according to BOP’s record explanation. A future date remains projected and can change through sentence-credit calculations or other lawful updates.
“Not in BOP Custody” is not a universal release status. The person may still be held for USMS before designation, in state or local custody, in ICE detention, or under another authority. Supervised release may also follow imprisonment. For federal prison history before 1982, the research indicates that a National Archives request may be necessary using identity and approximate prison dates.
Crockett Jail to Federal Custody
If federal authorities take a person from Crockett County Jail, start with the local transaction. The Crockett County Sheriff’s page lists Sheriff Victor De La Garza, 121 S. Highway 163, P.O. Box 1931, Ozona, TX 76943, telephone 325-392-2661 and fax 325-392-2045. It publishes no historical release ledger or county roster.
Ask whether the jail record identifies USMS as the receiving authority and whether “released” in its system includes transfers. Request the booking date and time, release date and time, release type, release authority, and “released to” or destination field if maintained. A county criminal cause and a federal cause are different records, so verify which court supplied the authority for the movement.
The sheriff’s physical transaction can resolve a common ambiguity: the date a court acted may differ from the date transportation occurred. If the local record instead names TDCJ, another county, or ICE, follow that named custodian. USMS and BOP are federal criminal channels, while ICE is a separate civil immigration system.
Court Orders and Actual Departure
Federal pretrial custody can end through release on conditions, dismissal, acquittal, sentencing outcomes, or another court action. It can also continue through transfer to a different holding jail or delivery to BOP. Read the operative docket entry and any attached order. A docket label alone may be too brief to distinguish conditional community release from a change of location.
For a local Crockett County cause related to the arrest, felony filings generally route through the 112th District Court and District Clerk. County-level misdemeanor records route according to the actual cause through the County Clerk. The official District Clerk page and County Clerk page identify Ninfa Preddy at P.O. Drawer C, Ozona, Texas 76943, telephone 325-392-2022. Those offices do not replace the federal clerk for a federal prosecution.
Keep four statements separate: released from Crockett County Jail, released from USMS custody, released from BOP custody, and released from ICE custody. One can be true while another is false. Exact wording prevents a transfer from being reported as freedom from all custody.
Resolve Conflicting Federal Status
Conflicts often arise because databases update on different schedules or describe different events. Preserve the displayed value, source, and search date. Confirm identity with a register number, federal case number, date of birth, known detention dates, and housing facility. Do not combine records merely because names match.
If the docket shows remand but the housing facility reports departure, look for a transfer destination or later release order. If BOP shows no record, determine whether the person remained in USMS pretrial custody and never entered the sentenced-prison population. If BOP shows a past release date, check the docket for supervised release and any subsequent proceeding. Ask the originating custodian to review a disputed entry rather than choosing the result that appears most convenient.
VINELink Texas may help with a participating local jail event, and the sheriff links to VINELink. It should not be described as a USMS or BOP historical locator. Likewise, TDCJ covers Texas state imprisonment, not a federal defendant merely housed in a Texas jail. The system responsible for the event is the authoritative starting point.
From Transfer to Verified Release
A careful release conclusion names both the system and event. “The housing jail recorded departure to USMS” means federal custody continued. “The federal court ordered release on conditions and the jail recorded physical departure” supports community release from that detention episode. “BOP lists a past Release Date” supports departure from federal prison but does not eliminate supervision, a detainer, or another case.
No USMS prison in Crockett County means searchers should avoid driving to a supposed local federal facility. Contact the court, identify the actual jail, and verify current visiting or records procedures before travel. Contract placements can change. The public USMS overview explains the system, but the case-specific docket and facility transaction supply the chronology.
Return to the Crockett County released inmate search if the destination is unknown. Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons page for sentenced-prison records and the ICE detainee locator guide for an immigration transfer. These routes should remain distinct even when the same person moves through more than one of them.
